KWAL was founded in 1947 when Jack Shapiro Purchased the equipment and technology of the defunct Beacon Paint Company. The new name "KWAL" was derived from the first syllable of the word "Qual"ity. The story of Howells, Inc. also started in the late 1940's when Steve Howells opened a small paint store in Salt Lake City. From their modest beginning, Howells became the Rocky Mountain West's largest independent paint and wallcovering distributor.

Shaw, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., is headquartered in Dalton, Georgia. Shaw produces and sells carpet, rugs, ceramic, hardwood, and laminate flooring for residential and commercial applications throughout the world. To be exact, we manufacture more than 600 million square yards of floor covering every year--enough to wrap a 6-foot wide path around the earth's equator 7 times.

Continuing the quest of Roger De Clerck, founder of Beaulieu Belgium, Mieke and Carl Bouckaert established Beaulieu of America in 1978 as the first producer of polypropylene oriental rugs. As sales grew Carl and Mieke invested in yarn extrusion in 1981 becoming the first manufacturer in the carpet and rug industry to produce their own yarn. Sparked by continued growth, the Bouckaerts diversified into tufting carpet in 1984, establishing a factory known today as Beaulieu Commercial in Chatsworth, Georgia.
